Bipolar disorder patients can experience manic episodes that may include elevated mood, extremely high energy levels, impulsivity, increased self-esteem, decreased need for sleep, racing thoughts, and reckless behavior. Depressive episodes may include feelings of sadness, hopelessness, changes in appetite and sleep patterns, difficulty concentrating, fatigue, and thoughts of death or suicide.
Bipolar disorder treatment includes a combination of medications, such as mood stabilizers or antipsychotics, and therapy, such as cognitive-behavioral therapy or psychoeducation. Lifestyle changes, including maintaining a regular sleep schedule, engaging in regular exercise, avoiding drugs and alcohol, and managing stress, can also be beneficial.
