What GeneSight is
GeneSight is a pharmacogenomic test. It looks at certain genes involved in how the body processes some medications, and provides information that a prescriber can weigh alongside everything else they know about you.
GeneSight pharmacogenomic testing may be available when clinically appropriate. Your psychiatric provider can discuss whether testing may be useful as part of your treatment.
What it does not do
Testing does not diagnose a condition, and it does not tell anyone which medication will work. It is one input among many — your history, your symptoms, your response to past treatment and your preferences all still matter.
Is the GeneSight test right for you?
It may be worth discussing if you answer yes to any of these:
- Has a mental health medication failed you in the past?
- Is your current mental health medication not working?
- Does your mental health medication cause unwanted side effects?
What the test process looks like
- The GeneSight test sample is collected by a simple cheek swab.
- Your sample is sent to the GeneSight lab for analysis, and your provider will typically receive your results in about two days.
- Your healthcare provider will review your results with you at your next appointment.
How much does the GeneSight test cost?
- Many insurance plans, including Medicare, often cover the entire or a significant portion of the cost of the test.
- Financial assistance plans are available for eligible patients to help cover the cost of the test.
- Interest-free payment plans are offered and allow patients to spread payments out over a 12-month period.

If you've already had testing
Bring the results. If you have previous psychiatric records, psychological testing, GeneSight results or other information that may be helpful to your care, you may provide those records to your provider.
